While wandering through a wooded area in Salem, Ohio, known as "The Glens," Burchfield was often inspired by the sights and sounds of nature. His ecstatic response to one of many hikes is captured both in this painting and in his journals: "Ochre boiling river, — frothing white rapids sunlit; dark green pines— wind at times— saw hepaticas for the first time in my life— I reviewed old forgotten paths of the imagination—as I sat spellbound gazing at the delicate flowers, listening to the booming roar of the rapids...a momentary glimpse of heaven."
