The relationship between music and uninhibited creativity is evident in Burchfield's doodle for Handel's "Water Music," framed posthumously with an album from his record collection and two of his brushes. Burchfield said, "...about 1926, I was introduced to the music of Handel, by way of excerpts from his Messiah.... Handel was undoubtedly the gateway by which we entered the enchanted land of Bach, Purcell, Vivaldi and the early Italian and French Schools."
