Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967)

Bold, stylized, contrasting lines subtly move the eye through a scene that is otherwise more realistically rendered. What impresses most immediately about this design is its rich, autumnal color palette. Burchfield has taken care to include within the frame his own color bar—much like what would be seen in the margins of the final printed wallpaper—to guide the reproduction of the unique palette.
