Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Song of the Tree Cricket, 1959-60, watercolor, gouache, white chalk and black charcoal on wove paper, 43 ¼ x 26 ½ inches, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Purchase and partial gift from anonymous donors and Albert M. and Raquel R. Wasserman, 2003
P.M. a small water color based on the 1933 view of Goehle’s, which I reconstructed last year. I improved on the composition; and although it was a struggle, at the end, it seemed like a good sketch.
Evening – B & I to Seneca to see “Illegal Entry” Afterwards drive to Hall Rd, park & then for walk down the road. A beautiful spot, quiet, and far away (no street lights) – Delicate graceful elms. A few Katydids, and of course, crickets.
Before bedtime, take Pal out to back yard. Tonight the poplar-enclosed area to the east, flooded with moonlight seemed like a vast hall or auditorium. –
