Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Landscape with Rain, 1917; watercolor on paper, 13 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches; Collection of Merritt P. Dyke
The "heavens open" and torrents of rain. During a lull in the P.M. B + I go to the corner to take a bus to Buffalo. After we had waited a half hour, and the rain began, we decided to return home. Evening, the girls went to the (CD) concert amid torrents of rain. We three remaining spent a restless evening - trying to interest ourselves in cards but bored. B + A - eventually play Chinese checkers and parlor golf while I alternately read in "Anna Karenina" and listen to the radio. At last, I gave it all up and played Dvorak's 2nd Symphony. It was even more powerful and beautiful than I remembered.
