Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Song of Spring, 1946; watercolor on paper, 24 5/8 x 28 3/4 inches; Private Collection
The sun could scarce break through a dense yellow mist that hung over the earth – Freight trains whistles echoed & reechoed and blurred up vivid pictures of great misty valleys –
A wonderful morning – bluebirds’ calls on all sides –
At even a violet haze obscured the sun, & as the robins commenced to sings; the song seemed to come from a far-off water-soaked pasture.
