Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, 1945; watercolor on paper, 27 x 44 inches; Image from the Burchfield Penney Art Center, Charles E. Burchfield Archives
Made a water-color of a memory from childhood – the night before Christmas – (the little brick house - Joe woke up and said he had heard Santa’s reindeers beating on the roof – I believed him) -
Everyone is charmed with the picture when I bring it in late in the afternoon -
Evening – to meet Mart - Her train is late - marked for midnight but she comes on an earlier train which gets in at 11:00. -
When we went to park, we got stuck at the foot of the incline, at the traffic circle. A man behind us tried to push us with his car, but our bumpers got entangled. Almost immediately a state guard truck spied us, back up to us, freed the bumpers & pulled us out in less time than it takes to write this.
