Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Hush Before the Storm, 1947; watercolor on cream wove watercolor paper, 40 x 30 inches; The Roland P. Murdock Collection, Wichita Art Museum
A cool, wet morning with a deep blue sky + bright sun - roofs + tree limbs glittering a haze arises from the ground. Elm bloom glows orange against the sky, robin songs – vivid upshooting grass with frost.
A vivid morn – rich vibrating green grass – slick sapling gleam white – shiny poplar – catkin scales catch the sunlight turning the tree to a sprinkle of highlights.
A day on which brown wood sheds with yellow signs catch the eye – bleached shingles – sunlit tin cans boxes – green dotted lilac bushes – heat waves overrise in the ground.
