A lowery day – Dawn sky with cold blue rifts –
A looseness in atmosphere; slushy snow, a brooding over the town; train bells ringing –
At night - The sounds of the loose dark night – A piano drumming a tune so indistinct it takes on a strange character – a boy going into a house shouting excitedly; naught but the sound of his voice strikes the ear: it a confused garble which is brought to a sudden close by the warbling squeak of the door closing – a train whistle comes from afar –
