FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Buffalo, NY – March 17, 2025 – The Burchfield Penney Art Center is proud to announce the renaming of its esteemed biennial craft art exhibition to The Sylvia L. Rosen Craft Art Biennial, formerly known as Art in Craft Media. The new name celebrates the legacy of Sylvia L. Rosen whose patronage championed the work of fellow craft artists and has made this exhibition possible.
Sylvia L. Rosen was a respected potter and educator who taught ceramics at SUNY Buffalo State, the University at Buffalo, and Amherst Senior High School. In 1987, she and her husband, Nathan, created the Sylvia L. Rosen Endowment for Fine Art in Craft Media at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. It has made possible the juried biennial craft art exhibitions with purchase awards. The first exhibition took place in 1988. Since then, these events have been a major force in the advancement and recognition of craft art in Western New York. Sylvia passed away in 2022 at the age of 102 and is dearly missed by her family, friends, and creative community.
Submissions are now open for the 2025 biennial, welcoming artists working in ceramics, fiber, glass, metal, wood, and other craft forms to apply. As a juried exhibition, the Sylvia L. Rosen Craft Art Biennial provides a vital platform for both emerging and established artists to present their work at the region’s leading museum dedicated to Western New York art.
The exhibition will be on view November 10, 2025 – March 29, 2026 at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Artists interested in applying can find submission guidelines here. The deadline for entries is 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 13th, 2025. All entries must be submitted through ArtCall™ at sylviarosenbiennial.artcall.org.
