Burchfield Penney Art Center Proudly Announces Award Winners in Biennial Juried Exhibition
Buffalo, NY —The Burchfield Penney Art Center is proud to announce the award winners selected from the participants in the Art in Craft Media 2023 exhibition. Through the Sylvia L. Rosen Endowment Purchase Award, one or more of the exhibited works is selected for the permanent collection of the Burchfield Penney Art Center—and up to $3,000 in purchase awards are made. One artist is awarded the Langley Kenzie Prize, which includes a solo exhibition at the Art Center, and one artist is selected to receive a monetary Margaret E. Mead Endowment Merit Award.
This year, Sylvia L. Rosen Endowment Purchase Awards go to Fileve Tlaloc for her trio of Coloured Pots: Izinkhamba kwamaKaladi, and Gary Sczerbaniewicz for his piece AOG (Angel Of God...). These outstanding pieces will be become a part of the Burchfield Penney's permanent collection.
The Langley H. Kenzie Award is awarded to artist Ann Clarke for her stunning fiber artworks Interior Landscape: Early Spring Early Morning and Interior Landscape: Winter Night. Clarke's work has been selected by different jurors for previous Art in Craft Media biennials, and we have long admired her artistry and imaginative fiber works. The Margaret E. Mead Endowment Merit Award and monetary prize goes to Hayden Haynes (Onondaga Nation, Deer Clan) for his intricately carved mixed media piece Generations.

Please note that the Art in Craft Media 2023 was previously scheduled to remain on view through March 31, 2024, however due to a scheduling conflict, the exhibition will now close on March 10, 2023.
A closing reception will be held at the Center on March 10, 2024 from 2:00 p.m.— 4:00 p.m. The reception will be free with the price of admission. ABOUT THE SYLVIA L. ROSEN ENDOWMENT
Sylvia L. Rosen (1919 - 2022) was a respected potter and educator who taught ceramics at SUNY Buffalo State, University at Buffalo, and Amherst Senior High School. In 1987, she and her husband, Nathan, created the Sylvia L. Rosen Endowment for Fine Art in Craft Media at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. It has made possible juried biennial craft art exhibitions with purchase awards, alternating with biennial craft art lectures by field specialists. The first exhibition took place in 1988. Since then, these events have been a major force in the advancement and recognition of craft media in Western New York.
