On Wednesday, as I was working in the landscape across from Burchfield’s former home in Gardenville, at about 3:40pm the light changed rather dramatically--it became darker and warmer. I challenged myself to describe it more specifically, as I knew Nancy would, and the word “golden” came to mind. Golden November light.
A few minutes later, 1917 came to mind—Burchfield’s “golden year.” He was just a young 24 year old artist and the year was one of great creativity, experimentation, and prolific output for him.
It occurred to me that I am experiencing my “golden year” this year as artist-in residence. The year has been marked by, yes, creativity, experimentation, and output, but also reflection, learning, and solidifying my vision.
I am deeply grateful to the Fleischmanns and the Andrews who support the residency program, and the the Burchfield team, who consistently go above and beyond in a myriad of ways to support my residency.
