Another excuse to have cake! Mary Harriman Rumsey (a.k.a. Mrs. Charles Cary Rumsey) was born on November 17, 1881. Her father was the railroad "baron", E.H. Harriman. She was the oldest of 6 children. A younger brother was Averell Harriman, the governor of New York and Ambassodor to Russia.
The family lived on an estate called "Arden", just outside of New York City. She is buried there. This Barnard educated woman was the founder of Junior League, a service organization of which I am proud to be a member.
Mrs. Rumsey passed away on December 18, 1934.
When not time traveling, working out, or hanging out at the Burchfield Penney, Mary Beth Parrinello is the religion teacher in the Montessori program at Nardin Academy in Buffalo, N.Y. She also volunteers her time at Westminster Presbytarian Church, C.G. Jung Center, and Junior League of Buffalo, which was founded by Mary Harriman Rumsey, Charles Cary Rumsey's wife!
