Five years ago, on a clear and windless fall day, the sparkling new Burchfield Penney Art Center (1300 Elmwood Ave.) opened its doors to the public for the first time. For 36 hours, visitors flooded through its airy atrium and into its enormous east gallery and other gleaming and glass-enclosed spaces to celebrate the opening of Buffalo’s first major new museum in more than a century.
The Burchfield Penney will launch events to mark its fifth anniversary, beginning with a film screening of the action epic “For Greater Glory” at 7 tonight and featuring more than a dozen performances, tours and events through Sunday night.
Perhaps the highlight of the weekend will be a marathon, 72-hour performance in and around the center by performance artist Stoney Connors. That gets started Friday at 10 a.m. and runs throughout the weekend with short breaks built in for sleep. Also Friday night is the opening of “Woody Vasulka: Didactic Video” in the center’s high-tech project space.
