My own description of what is going on at Albright is that modern art is now being bought by the square mile. Of course if I said that publicly someone would be bound to say ― “Look, Burchfield, don’t you paint the largest water-colors in history?” (they probably never even heard of the great Chinese masters) ― And if I replied that as far as I could remember I never in my life painted a water-color they’d think I was double-talking ― But that’s true ― I paint “pictures” using water-color as a medium ― I deplore the use of the words oils, paintings, canvases, water-colors, papers in place of the word picture. But that’s all beside the point ―
