Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Poplar Trees, January 1916; watercolor and graphite on paper, 20 x 13 3/4 inches; Burchfield Penney Art Center, Gift in honor and in memory of John I. H. Baur, friend of Charles E. Burchfield and friend of Charles Rand Penney, 2000
P.M. Visit from the Braasches – Their enthusiasm and understanding so great, that they always leave me feeling that visual art is the most important thing in the world. I showed them all the pictures for the Whitney Show, and they fell in love with the 1918 “Black Houses” and purchased it (the 1916 – Poplar Trees, & 1917 – August North – & the 1920 – Spring Evening – also seemed to appeal to them greatly) –
