From NYC: BPAC Artist-in-Residence Entry 1, July 16, 2013

Throughout her year as Burchfield artist-in-residence, Janelle Lynch will share her thoughts and impressions with us as we share her journey into the spirit and work of Charles Burchfield.

As part of my interest in understanding relationships that were important to CEB, I spent time in the archives last week reading correspondence between him and patron, supporter, and friend, Dr. Theodor Braasch. The follow quote from a letter dated October 5, 1955, relates to The August North (A Memory of Childhood), 1917, and to Nancy Weekly's current research about CEB and synesthesia.

Braasch refers to himself and his wife, Josephine:

"We are fascinated by the petunias, many of which are like sobbing lips, but the over all composition is what really gets us. We feel that if this picture were suddenly transported to a new planet, where its symbols could not possibly be understood, it would still be regarded greatly as a sort of visual music."

Janelle Lynch is the 2013 Burchfield resident artist. She has garnered international recognition over the last decade for her large-format photographs of the urban and rural landscape. Widely exhibited, her work is in several public and private collections including the Burchfield Penney, George Eastman House Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Newark Museum, the Fundación Vila Casas, Barcelona, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Salta, Argentina.
