From the Catskill Mountains: BPAC Artist-in-Residence Entry 1, June 30, 2013

Throughout her year as Burchfield artist-in-residence, Janelle Lynch will share her thoughts and impressions with us as we share her journey into the spirit and work of Charles Burchfield.

Arrived back in New York on Thursday afternoon after 10 days abroad, eager to reconnect to my BPAC project. It has been deeply satisfying to have this relationship with CEB's work and the BPAC staff. Went to DC Moore Gallery to see the Woods, Lovely, Dark, and Deep show curated by John Zinsser, and in particular the two Burchfield pieces, Wood Lilies, 1944, and Black Tree (Gloomy Tree), 1917. Looks like Melancholy - Sadness(Conventions for Abstract Thoughts), also from 1917, is included in the latter. Met Heidi Lange, a director of the gallery. We discussed our mutual regard for the BPAC staff. She said that the Burchfield family held them and Nancy, in particular, for her career-long devotion to CEB, in the highest esteem. As do I.

Janelle Lynch is the 2013 Burchfield resident artist. She has garnered international recognition over the last decade for her large-format photographs of the urban and rural landscape. Widely exhibited, her work is in several public and private collections including the Burchfield Penney, George Eastman House Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Newark Museum, the Fundación Vila Casas, Barcelona, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Salta, Argentina.
