July 27 —

To Emporium by way of Olean, and back by way of Salamanca, a drive of 265 miles.

Partly cloudy, misty, sultry and moist, occasional scattered showers.

I enjoyed getting away from myself, and the sight of strange country….The sight of great quantities of Turk’s caps lilies growing near the junction of the Railroad and my road, impelled me to stop.

A sluggish creek filled with Arrowhead, in full bloom — A group of four or five wild duck (dark gray) scatter at my approach. One lingers and scolds me all the time I stayed. Pick a bouquet of the lilies. Great bull-frogs — they gave a peculiar cry as they dove into the water.
