P.M. Near Covered Bridge and North wandering, painting. A strange evil day - earth soggy -- heavy lowhanging mist clouds - twilight even at noon - Walking along wood walled road I heard a wood-thrush's song -
When dusk drove me from the hollow, I came out into a lighter twilight -
In Post's near rainy day pond - hideous stumps and logs, reflections in glassy pond - I stopped by fence from mingled fear and irresoluteness - At once a tremendous ringing and pounding commenced in my ears - growing louder and louder - though this ringing was terrific, yet the woods seemed absoltely silent - from somewhere a strange bell, (such as [is] used in Chinese music) commenced - I was too overcome to take note of anything - finally a familiar farm sound broke the spell and I relaxed, in a cold sweat - and continued my way homeward -
