April 27—(Sun.)
P.M. B & I to gallery (Albright)—to see Max Beckman show & “Design is your Business”—also on was a photographic show. “Design etc.“ was an exposition of all sorts of modern ... gadgets—one was a featherweight wheelbarrow (presumably of magnesium), so light it has no effort to lift it with one hand. Many other things. But of course for me the one thing worthwhile was the Max Beckman room. Beautiful color (no color) with bold black outlines and forms, well organized. A fine (and poignantly tragic) self-portrait—I could not help comparing him with Grosz—Both driven from Germany because of their conflict with Nazism, one (Beckman) retained his true artistic vision and continues to produce their visual dreams in Amsterdam, Grosz on the other hand cannot forget his bitter hatred of his oppression, and will probably spend the rest of his life making pictures of hate; Neither probably can help re-acting just the way they have.
Afterwards for drive thru Forest Lawn & then home by way of (Delevan to Pine Ridge to Genesee to Union Rd.) C.—calls at 10:30 to tell us she missed the 10:00 bus. We arrange for her to take Seneca St bus, and meet her at Indian Church Rd.
