Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Night of the Equinox, 1917-1955; watercolor, ink, gouache, and charcoal on paper mounted on paperboard, 40 1/8 x 52 5/16 inches; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of the Sara Roby Foundation
All day on the "Winter Night" picture (I think it must have a more descriptive title, such as "Thunderstorm on a Winter Night" or "The Night of the Equinox")–I worked on with joy and exuberance, with a feeling of power such as I have not known for months–At the end of the day, exhausted mentally & emotionally I called B out to look at it. She was completely "bowled over" by it, and declared it to be one of my best.
In a daze of happiness all evening.
