Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), North Woods in Spring, 1951-64; watercolor and charcoal on joined paper, 56 x 40 inches; Flint Institute of Arts, Bequest of Mary Mallery Davis
All day intensively on the “North Woods in Spring”.
In it I am coming closer to the realization of the theme of North in woods. But I doubt if I will ever be satisfied; and will always be searching [for] the ultimate statement. It is better so. The search for a truth is better than the realization.
North is an arbitrary term — It is the Pole that my imagination yearns for —
