April 6 – (Saturday)
To Pipe Creek –
A cold, but sunny day, with a light wind, and white clouds.
Explore ravine before lunch. Very wild. A fresh coolness suggesting snowbanks.
The third falls – I stand on a narrow ledge by the deep pool at the foot of the falls. The warm sun strikes the rocky cliff at my back. A beautiful spot – I regretted not having brought the lunch with me.
On return climb hill, & explore secondary ravine, following it back to main one. Eat lunch on rocks by the stream.
All afternoon on sketch of hillside with trees in sunlight and the blue & white sky beyond.
When done, drive out on dirt road running east & west, eat supper there. Robins from a distant woods, sun rays thru silver holes in the blue gray layer clouds. Flock of birds, plainly visible against sky but the moment they flew in front of distant blue hill, they vanished completely. Bluebirds singing on wing.
After supper, walk in wild woods to sout. Bouquet of Spring beauties. They were very cold to the touch.
A [fiery] red sunset, spreading out over the whole western sky.
