The sound-inspired watercolors of Charles E. Burchfield, the strange and whimsical sculptures of Robert A. Booth and an exploration of body norms through ceramic art will be featured in the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s free monthly event on Friday.
Opening celebrations for “Charles E. Burchfield: A Resounding Roar,” “The Scrutiny of Objects: Sculptures by Robert A Booth” and “Body Norms: Selections from the Spong Collection,” in addition to workshops and musical performances from A Musical Feast and Barbara Levy Daniels are all part of Friday’s event, held from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
The Burchfield exhibition includes works that were inspired by the Western New York painter’s obsession with natural and man-made sounds, from the chirp of crickets to the strains of Sebelius. Booth’s sculptures, meanwhile, have more to do with the way events stick inside human memory and how to go about translating those memories into three dimensions. And in “Body Norms,” the Burchfield Penney has mined its newly acquired collection of ceramic sculptures from collectors Dean Spong and Alan Mardorf to “explore a wide range of imaginative depictions of the body, moving beyond norms and ideals to illustrate perceptions of the ‘real’ and the fantastical.”
A Musical Feast, which frequently performs in the Burchfield Penney, presents music by Amy Williams along with “Words and Music: Radio Play,” by Samuel Beckett and Morton Feldman. For more info, call 878-6011 or visit burchfieldpenney.org.
