The gleaming galleries of the Burchfield Penney Art Center (1300 Elmwood Ave.) will be abuzz starting at 5:30 p.m. today, as the museum opens three exhibitions during its monthly “Second Fridays” event. “Edible Complex,” in the museum’s second-floor sculpture gallery, features Cheryl Jackson’s 1998 installation “Foods R U.S.,” a sort of messy shrine to the American food product in its many forms, which, as former News art critic Richard Huntington wrote, “inspires a revulsion for our nation’s eating habits if not for the entire culture.” That show also features work by Biff Henrich, A.J. Fries and Kathy Simmonds. “Deconstructing Urbania,” in the Margaret L. Wendt and R. William Doolittle Gallery, traces the artistic evolution of the late local artist James Vullo, who began his career with realist work in the late ’30s and eventually transitioned to cubist abstractions and fractured landscapes.
Finally, the Burchfield will exhibit a number of rarely viewed paintings and doodles by Charles Burchfield from the private collections of various Western New Yorkers—an opportunity to consider and explore the artist from a slightly different direction.
