A looseness in atmosphere, slushy snow, a brooding over the town; train bells ringing –
At night – The sounds of the loose dark night — a piano drumming a tune so indistinct it takes on a strange character – a boy going into a house shouting excitedly; naught but the sound of his voice strikes the ear: it a confused garble which is brought to a sudden close by the wailing squeak of the door closing – a train whistle comes from afar –
