Kath kindly suggested that I continue my blog until my show.

Of the many things that I am grateful for is how, through you and Burchfield's work, I have cultivated--or rediscovered--an interest in ornithology. Here's a link to Spinning on Air's recent program Bird Songs & Songs About Birds: http://www.wnyc.org/story/bird-songs-songs-about-birds/

Knowing my sensitivity to sound, you won't be surprised that I respond most favorably to the bird song in the beginning and to Jim Fassett's "Symphony of the Birds" about 50 minutes into the program. It's a collage of recordings.

I recall, with fondness, your text message about the red-tailed hawk on the campus weathervane; Burchfield's use of "Red bird" rather than "cardinal," because the latter seemed too pretentious; our conversation about our early bird-related experiences with our grandmothers; and one of my most memorable experiences in the archive study center with you and Tullis--a "seeing" lesson in front of Bluebird and Cottonwoods (1917).

Janelle Lynch is the 2013 Burchfield resident artist. She has garnered international recognition over the last decade for her large-format photographs of the urban and rural landscape. Widely exhibited, her work is in several public and private collections including the Burchfield Penney, George Eastman House Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Newark Museum, the Fundación Vila Casas, Barcelona, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Salta, Argentina.
