I was struck with the beauty of the dead leaves by our neighbor’s garage- the sort of beauty that is absolute. The soft tones of brown, lavender, yellow brown and reddish brown, with sharp accents of green grass were very satisfying.

The agonizing mystery of Infinity. 

Cold, but sunny. The outdoor work table covered with snow and ice, which soon melted. [Chickadees] busy and noisy, searching for food – what clean-looking dainty little creatures!

Eastman (on our walk to school from lunch) said the wind “got on his nerves” upon my remarking that it was life to me.  Bob R said that he liked a hot sultry still day. I cannot reconcile that with his giant physique or his mind.

Working in studio on book-like folders for early (1915-16) water-colors, which I intend to use for my diaries too[i]. Ran out of chip-board in mid P.M. Had Art drive me in, to Ailing-Cory + get more.

The great difficulty of my whole career as a painter, is that what I love most (i.e. weather, change of seasons) not only holds little of interest for most people, but in many of its phases, is downright disagreeable, and not even to be mentioned!  

At late twilight flying squirrels, who spent the daylight hours in the attic of the house, would come out one by one, fly to the base of the pine tree, scramble to the top, and then glide to a woods nearby.

A water-color (16 x 48) of the transition of Fall to Winter. – which I have been dreaming about ever since the Art School Days. A fantasy – it came off very well. 

P.M. – B & I in Shopping – Bought a rain-coat for sketching – to D.C.D’s & brought the 4th Symphony of Nielsen, the 1st & 9th of Beethoven & ordered the 3rd (Sinfonia Expansiva) of Nielsen.
