The January thaw. - Thick almost impenetrable fog - The pores of the earth seem to open and exude a chill dampness into the sodden air -

My view of Nature now is like seeing sunlight thru a board fence: here and there we see a flash of sunlight thru an unwary crack.

A dream – A picket fence by and alley, with wild morning-glories growing in profusion over it – early morning with a misty sun rising, the vines wet with dew...

After a brief sunny period at early morning, it started to snow again, and kept it up all day –

     The day spent by writing a letter to Rev. Walker who would convert me to Lutheranism. As I was coming up Garfield Avenue, I saw one of the prettiest sunsets that I have saw. When it began, it was merely pink stripes across a pale blue and greenish sky.

 The “January Spring” with its exciting afterglows and smoking chimneys and wide-roaming trains has come and gone and now the earth is shut in by a low dark sky
