A picturesque swamp, on both sides of the road, with many dead bushes. Plenty of dragonflies, especially of the type I want to use, i.e., the ones with black and white spotted wings.

Dream: Of being in a woods, and coming upon a picture by Hopper which he had just completed. (It seemed as if he was “summering” in this woods and had rented a small portion of it, to which he confined himself– There were several large oaks surrounding a small clearing). The picture I thought was superbly done, and made all that I had been doing lately seem weak by comparison.
Dream – of being in Cleveland, and planning to take the 8:00 A.M. train home to Salem. I had “ordered” my ticket and was on my way to the station...
Who can sound the depths of the wind? Whence comes this life-creating blast of icy air? Yesterday—so quiet and sultry—today so wild & cool. When the wind is blowing we must expand & swell else we be blown away. Trees grow tall with stiffened trunks let their limbs relax to be waved and tossed at the will of the wind.
Trip to “The Gowanda Country"...A day that was beautiful in every detail from first to last, and one in which I felt the wonder of nature as if it were newly created (as indeed it is perennially) and yet somehow I cannot put it down on paper. I feel lacking.
