We pounced upon a butterfly book and soon we were deeply engrossed in the pictures. I had made a collection the summer before with Bill’s aid, and it was interesting to recognize among them the different ones that we had captured.

Dinner at the College in honor of myself and Peter Andrews (who has donated my “December Storm” to the College — which is the hope of all concerned will be the nucleus of a “Burchfield Center” at Buffalo — Another warmly human affair — After the unveiling — Ken Winebrenner read aloud his foreword to the catalogue of my show in 1963 at the college — while slides (in color) were projected onto a screen — I was in a state of euphoria.

Late afternoon to see Mr. Bustard about getting my old job back—He seemed so glad to see me and assured me I would be welcome back at the office—

Arrived at Salem about 5:30 am after an all-night ride on the train. Feeling seedy, grimy and hungary—and in very low spirits; feeling that my trip to New York was a complete failure. But the welcome I got from the family made up for everything—

The grey of the midwinter snow-spirit – a religious whitish violet light comes from above – objects a short distance are like ghosts.
