At late afternoon a big blue bank of cloud spreads over the western sky; there is a cold yellow light above it from the vanishing sun; a high cold wind following the year’s first snowfall...

"...Twilight dark & cloudy.  A cold dampish wind from south...What beauty do I see in life now that I have lost an active interest in an afterlife...Have I a soul?..." 

As I had been unable to save Bertha’s present until today – there was no surprise for her.

I paint “pictures” using water-color as a medium ― I deplore the use of the words oils, paintings, canvases, water-colors, papers in place of the word picture.

Clear sparkling day – sky just above the deep blue lake was white, which then blended into blue. I enjoyed walking on the very waters’ edge, in the shining went sand.

P.M. – B & I to Chestnut Ridge Park – A chilly day with strong S.W. wind. To the western part – park and for walk up the big ravine...

... the sight of dead wild sunflowers and the ash-tree stirred me, and I resolved to paint out-doors after lunch. A surge of joy went through that once again I was granted the urge to paint.

Trip to Pittsburgh with B to see International show after a period of indecision, & renunciation, and final decision we ought to go….As to my own “Elevators” — I could not at any time see it to be as good as I hoped it was, tho it grew better as time went on.]

Out sketching in the Big Woods—A wonderful feeling to be out again after not having painted for so long a time—A cool sunny day, quiet generally, but at times a strong wind passed thru the tree-tops, and in its wake showers of golden maple leaves fluttered lazily down to the ground. Young hemlocks speckled with leaves.
