 Some of the work went well, but great difficulty with inventing a motif to represent the call of the veery thrush. Finally at late afternoon the solution came.

Hot and humid. A “do-nothing” day – in and out of studio – finally made a drawing on a 30 X 36 scale of the Egypt Rd. picture...

To the luncheon meeting of the art committee of the Albright Gallery – all present, including the new director, Gordon Smith – I always come away from these meetings frustrated and piqued at myself for not saying what I think – 

There seem to be many more tiger swallow-tails this year than usual. Gorgeous creatures, they are to be seen everywhere, making dazzling effect on wild iris, lavender lilacs, and pink roses.

Out painting. A lot of driving around before I could get in the mood. Finally settled on a spot on Route 39 –A row of roadside maples, with open field to the south...

Going thru my 1917 pencil notes. Thoughts aroused by the 1916-17 work:

To Buffalo on various errands and somehow or other during the course of the morning I found a solution to my difficulties and therefore peace of mind. 

Trip to Kenney’s wood cabin and the mountains (I let K. drive so I could look around). First view of snow-covered mountains peaks in sunlight with a cloudy sky behind them...
