We experience disgust and delight—yuck and yum—every day. Socially and culturally informed, these emotions and reactions color our world by expressing themselves through strong physical and vocal reflexes. Disease, death, morality, sexuality, and survival are all filtered through the spectrum of disgust and delight, themes which are commonly explored in art. Artists approach these themes materially through texture, color, shape, and subject—infusing their own impulses around intimate emotions and encouraging reflection from the viewer. This exhibition seeks to encourage the viewer to investigate their own personal feelings and biases through the lens of the beautiful and repulsive collection at Burchfield Penney Art Center.
