The Front Yard film screening series features seasonally changing projected media art programs, highlighting the work of Western New York artists. Curators Dorothea Braemer and Meg Knowles were attracted to the work of Laura Kraning due to her focus on both natural and industrial landscapes.
Similar to the thematic interests of Charles Burchfield, Kraning exploits the textures, shapes, rhythms, and symbolic layers found in different settings. On the one hand, hers is a personal interpretation, while on the other she has an inherent respect for the landscape itself. Her film work draws on her background as an abstract painter.
Kraning’s work has been shown internationally at festivals including the BFI London Film Festival, New York Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, The Edinburgh International Film Festival, Athens International Film and Video Festival, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, and MOMA’s Doc Fortnight, among others. Kraning is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media Study at the University at Buffalo.
