Emerging Visions marks a return as much as an arrival, as this is the first student exhibition at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in over two decades. The works gathered here reflect a generation of young artists deeply rooted in material practice as a response to the alienating and overwhelming complexities of the present moment. Across the disciplines of ceramics, fiber arts, metal smithing, photography, design, animation, and painting, these students are testing the boundaries of physical form, the range of their very human voices, and searching for tactility and meaning.
This exhibition is a threshold of sorts: a moment in which these young artists are beginning to cohere, and choosing who, and what, to be. Ultimately, college is about the life after college, and their ways of seeing and making will carry them forward into the world beyond this university. In bringing these works into the cultural landscape of this institution, Emerging Visions functions as the gateway to the sometimes rocky trajectory of an artistic existence.
It is not an easy road, but you can’t beat the view.
