Dualities brings together recent paintings by Buffalo artist Danielle Saeva that explore the dynamic tensions between opposing forces: light and darkness, strength and vulnerability, the physical and the spiritual, the conscious and the subconscious. Building upon ideas introduced in her Ritual series, the exhibition presents works that investigate personal transformation through richly layered symbolism and evocative narrative imagery while introducing a new body of work that expands these themes into increasingly dimensional compositions.
Drawing upon her background in painting, art therapy, and community arts education, Saeva creates immersive visual experiences that invite contemplation rather than certainty. Figures, botanical forms, architectural fragments, and symbolic objects occupy dreamlike spaces where the boundaries between interior and exterior worlds begin to dissolve. In these paintings, ritual becomes not simply an act but a process of reflection, healing, and self-discovery. Her newest works push this exploration further, incorporating physical depth and sculptural elements that extend beyond the picture plane, blurring the distinction between painting and object and creating a more tangible dialogue between the artwork and the viewer.
Saeva's evolving practice has been shaped by both her commitment to arts education and her immersion within Buffalo's vibrant artistic community. She currently maintains a studio at Industrial Arts on Hertel Avenue, where painters, woodworkers, furniture makers, and other craftspeople work side by side in a collaborative creative environment. This exchange between disciplines has encouraged an expanded approach to materiality and construction, informing the increasingly dimensional character of her recent work while reinforcing the handmade sensibility that has long defined her practice.
Whether through luminous oil paintings or compositions that physically project into the viewer's space, Dualities examines the coexistence of seemingly opposing realities. Rather than presenting contradiction as conflict, Saeva embraces duality as an essential condition of human experience, a place where growth emerges through balance, transformation, and the continual negotiation between the worlds we inhabit and those we carry within ourselves.
