Charles Rand Penney was an accomplished lawyer, seasoned traveler, and distinguished collector. Through a life-long devotion to learning, he created more than one hundred remarkable collections of art and cultural artifacts. Among his international collections are contemporary painting and sculpture, folk art, antiques, World Exposition memorabilia, and 20th-century American art by Charles E. Burchfield, Emil Ganso, and Robert Goodnough. Several of his collections toured around the world. In addition, Dr. Penney lectured about art and antiques across the United States and in more than seventy-five countries as distant as Siberia, Mongolia, Indonesia, and Tahiti. In 1991 and 1992, Charles Rand Penney donated his collection of Western New York Art to the Burchfield Art Center. It is comprised of 162 works by 110 artists. This exhibition and an accompanying collection catalog presented this generous gift to the public in 1992.
