THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS
RECENT ACQUISITIONS 2013-2015
The artworks in this hallway are a sample of what the Burchfield Penney Art Center has acquired over the last 3 years. Through donations, active collaboration with collectors, and through purchasing works, The Center is dedicated to collecting both contemporary and historic pieces that illustrate the depth and breadth of Western New York’s artistic production. From the naïve to the masterfully rendered, from realism to abstraction, Western New York artists have always determined their own style and wielded great freedom of expression in the face of established traditions.
While these works do not conform to a single theme, we welcome you to explore, compare and contrast these selections. Do you see things that some of these works have in common? Forms such as circles, and colors like icy blues appear in a number of pieces in different ways and with different meanings. While some works are entrenched in complex meaning, others such as Alexander Levy’s Farming invite us to share in mood and feeling. Each work in this exhibit, as well as the entire collection, offer us varied experiences of ideas and feelings. In all, these are a selection of some of our – recently acquired – favorite things.
