Journals and other artifacts from the Burchfield Archives were on display with works of art from the Burchfield Collection to celebrate publication of Charles Burchfield's Journals: The Poetry of Place, edited by J. Benjamin Townsend and published by the State University of New York Press. Excerpts from the journals illustrated Burchfield's experiences on painting expeditions, reveal his close observation of and affection for the natural realm, and describe the developmental process of certain works, such as one of Burchfield's rare oil paintings, Grain Elevators, which was completed in 1938 after seven years of work. Curated by Nancy Weekly
In the related "Symposium on Charles Burchfield" held on October 17, 1992, Dr. Townsend was on a panel to discuss his decades-long research in producing the prodigious tome.
