50 in 50: Fifty Works for Fifty Years can more clearly be understood by knowing the process for the selection of the works and the classification of this special recognition. When the idea of a campaign to build our collection-a legacy of our Golden Anniversary-was introduced by Tony, it was with pride and enthusiasm that he knew the community would respond.
During the past year, the Burchfield Penney acquired more than 350 artworks for our collection. In this group were targeted acquisitions that could stand as symbols for our anniversary year. In addition to the executive director and curatorial staff identifying these works as notable, our Art Acquisitions Committee and Board of Trustees reviewed these with an elevated consideration.
The result is a testament to our cultural history. These acquisitions range from 1849-2017, with each decade of the 20th and 21st centuries represented.
