This exhibition and the selection of works included are a direct reference to the book by Bruce Fisher of the same title. A collection of essays, the book brings into light the history and the current situation of the cities, both fondly and critically referred to as the Rustbelt.
With a focus on the art and artist of Western New York, the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s collection serves as a perfect illustration of at least one cities evolution through the 19th, 20th, and now 21st centuries. Our artists frequently comment on the industrial past, and often were participants in its labor force. Many members of our community have a personal connection to the ups and downs of local economies, and whether obvious representations or suggested realities the work of artists mark that time.
