Artist, educator, and writer William Cooper’s compositions, produced primarily in oils and acrylics, employ aesthetics and themes that connect his experiences as an African American back to his African heritage. Self-defined as an Afrocentric artist, Cooper uses metaphor, symbolism, line, form, and color to translate his creative and curious nature into harmonious, illusory compositions of his experiences while also allowing viewers to bring their own meanings to his work... For an ongoing series of exhibitions that explore how the work of Charles E. Burchfield relates to work by other artists, the Burchfield Penney Art Center will compare Burchfield and the American poet Walt Whitman. Burchfield’s poetic writings about nature mirror his expressive paintings and drawings. Indeed, around 1956 he was quoted as saying, “I am seeking simplified reaffirmation of some of my early period. I want to praise and exalt nature as Walt Whitman has done in ‘Leaves of Grass’.” The exhibition will show how Burchfield and Whitman had parallel perceptions of nature expressed both visually and textually... According to the American Alliance of Museums, most museums only display about 3 percent of their collections at a time. The Burchfield Penney Art Center holds more than 12,000 objects, with new acquisitions being added to museum holdings every year. An added emphasis on showing contemporary artists from the region that the museum serves means that many works from more than half a century of collecting are not seen by visitors for decades at a time. The exhibition The Unseen features works recently acquired by the museum and works that have not been seen on the museum walls for many years... Learn more about The Unseen.
