Buffalo, New York is situated on the central line to view a total eclipse of the sun on Monday, April 8, 2024—one day before the 131st anniversary of Charles E. Burchfield’s birth. To honor what is being called the “Great North American Solar Eclipse”, the Burchfield Penney Art Center is working with Kevin K. Williams, Ph.D., on an astronomy-themed Burchfield exhibition and related programs. Buffalo-based acoustic folk duo Sally Schaefer (fiddle, mandolin, vocals) and Tyler Bagwell (guitar, vocals) breathe fiery new life into old folk songs, bluegrass standards, classic country hits, popular Americana numbers, and a treasure trove of Celtic melodies.
Sally is a well-known musician around the Western New York area, appearing with numerous bands representing an array of musical genres, including Creek Bend bluegrass, the Buffalo Bluegrass Allstars, Celtic rock outfit McCarthyizm, and touring alt rock band 10,000 Maniacs. Tyler is a historian, songwriter, and brewer with a vast repertoire of songs and stories. His original pieces are reflective of folk writing styles of the last 60+ years melded with fervent interest in local history.
