The Green Book: Guide to Freedom, 51 minutes, 2019 Directed by Yoruba Richen
This is a different look at the Green Book from the one presented in the Oscar Winning fiction film. Combining archival footage of everyday black life with interviews with contemporary African American scholars and activists, Richen tells the story of Victor Green’s “Green Book” and illustrates the its ubiquitous use from the early 1900s until desegregation. The Green Book guide was created by and for black Americans to support safe travel in the United States and internationally in the twentieth century.
