What do you see? I see a glass block with a glass bed in the center. The bed seems to be in a bubble surrounded by what looks like embedded thin leaves reaching up and around but not getting in that bubble area. My eye keeps returning to the small glass bed, with no mattress, no pillows, it’s made out of clear glass, the viewer can see right through it, and it’s probably fragile. So, I have many questions for the artist. Is the artwork a metaphor for a nightmare? Is it about dreaming? Or maybe it’s about how it feels to be still after a full day and not letting anything in to break those quiet moments just before falling asleep.
The sketch prompt is to sketch a glass block and a bed in the center. Make your bed any way you choose. It might have a quilt with a kitten sleeping at the foot of the bed. You decide. What objects or elements will you add to create meaning that surrounds your bed?
Time to TALK. The bed made out of glass is an important object for the artist to use. The title of the work is Detach. What might be separated, apart, or removed? The bed or the person that sleeps in it? When you think of your bed, what comes to mind? Is someone reminding you to make your own?
