What do you see? I see a canoe hanging from the ceiling with holes drilled into the sides and bottom. Numerous holes, not a tiny hole that might cause a leak and let water in, but big holes all the same size. The canoe is no longer functional. I see lots of the drilled holes on the ground forming the shadow of the boat and a dustpan laying among the holes. The environment of the canoe has changed, it’s not in the water or docked by a beach. Doesn’t the canoe look lonely like it lost its family?
The sketch prompt is inspired by a quote from the artist, “A functional object, when placed out of the realm of physical interaction, takes on an entirely new meaning.” Select an object you want to displace. Sketch the object in a different environment or drill holes in the object defining it as a nonfunctional piece.
Time to TALK. The artist is interested in issues and ideas about time, change, and mortality. How important do you think the dustpan is in this work of art? Why doesn’t it have holes drilled into it too?
