Sandy White, Executive Producer and Director of the documentary LeRoi: Living in Color is living out a childhood dream as a journalist, visual media artist, and storyteller.
A Canisius College graduate, Sandy holds a master’s degree in Urban Planning from the U.B. School of Architecture and Regional Planning. She serves as a Board member of Ujima Theatre Inc., the Alzheimer’s Association of WNY, Dreamspace. Inc. and the Buffalo Association of Black Journalists. As an award-winning veteran news reporter for more than 20 years, she has covered stories from South Africa to Buffalo and Los Angeles to Brooklyn for KNBC-TV; local news stations, and Black Entertainment Television.
Having a deep need to understand the world at an early age, she ordered a slide projector from a magazine with her mother’s help and, filled her playroom with projected screen images of cultures from around the world. Her interest in storytelling in film accelerated following an opportunity she had to chat with Golden Globe-nominated Director Ava DuVernay on the set of the historical drama SELMA a few years ago.
She notes, “Speaking with her as I worked behind the scenes in a small extra role over a period of two weeks; I was inspired to not give up on my dreams as a producer. It’s been full steam ahead ever since, and I love it!”
Today as a broadcast journalist, documentary producer, and owner of her own media production company and consulting firm, this hometown talent is looking to expand her footprint in Buffalo film and video production.
“Western New York is a treasure chest filled with amazing stories of triumph, courage, and resilience. LeRoi Johnson’s story is one such example; it’s inspirational and surprising. Directing the documentary we learned more about the internationally awarded local artist and; the positive impact he had over 5 months working with young people from participating collaborating, educational institutions.”
Currently, Sandy is writing a screenplay and is in production on another documentary expected to be released in the summer of 2023.
