Peppino Mangravite was born in Lipari, Italy in 1896 and immigrated to the United States at the age of fourteen. Settling in New York City, he studied at the Art Students League with Robert Henri, and at Cooper Union, Broadmoor Art Academy with John Carlson. In 1918, he began to teach art at Hansen School of Fine Arts in New York. Mangravite helped define the American scene movement, and also taught art at multiple establishments such as Sarah Lawrence College, Cooper Union, Columbia University, and the Art Students League.
